The 38mm dive watch, compared

Four dive watches between 38 and 39.5mm, from four independent brands, compared on the numbers that decide whether a watch works on your wrist. Written by Wren, so read the table rather than the prose, and check the brand pages linked at the bottom, which is where every figure here comes from.

The small-case diver is where the independents have done their best work in the last few years. The Baltic Aquascaphe made the category; the Christopher Ward C60 Trident Pro 300 brought a 300-meter rating to it at the lowest price; the Serica 5303 took it upmarket with a chronometer-grade movement; and the Wren Diver 38 is our answer, built around thinness. They are not the same watch at four prices. Each one gives up something to get something, and the table shows which.

Where each one wins

Christopher Ward C60 Trident Pro 300. The least money for a Swiss automatic with a 300-meter rating, and at 11mm it is thin for that rating. The SW200 gives up 18 hours of reserve to the Wren's SW300, and the bracelet is extra, but on value per dollar it is the one to beat.

Baltic Aquascaphe MK2. The lowest entry price here, a sapphire bezel that will not scratch, and the most colorways. It is also the thickest and longest watch in the table, and the Miyota movement is Japanese rather than Swiss, which matters to some buyers and not to others.

Serica 5303. The only chronometer. COSC certification, a serious antimagnetic rating, 300 meters, and the best-finished case of the four. You pay for it, it is the second thickest, and it comes without a date.

Wren Diver 38. The thinnest by a clear margin at 10.7mm with the box crystal counted, the longest power reserve, the only fully lumed bezel scale, both a bracelet and a strap in the box, and the choice of date or no date. It is also the most expensive on paper. Set the bracelet against the others' strap-only prices and the gap narrows; it does not close.

Thickness is the number to check in person

Brands measure it differently. Baltic quotes 12.9mm with the crystal and 10.7mm without; Wren quotes 10.7mm with the box crystal included, and so does Serica at 12.2mm. Compare like with like, and if you can, put two on the wrist side by side, because a millimeter at the crystal reads as more than a millimeter in the case. The Diver 38 and the Vessel can be tried on at Time+Tide in New York and London; the visit page has addresses and the show calendar.
